Strategies

Hotel GSH is the result of a building project which involved a renovation of Hotel Ryttergården and the establishment of a new building, which today forms the framework for meetings and conferences. The new building is fan-shaped and connects the former main buildings from Hotel Ryttergården in the most beautiful way.

The strategy was – and still is – to show construction that can inspire others in the construction industry to build sustainably and with consideration for minimizing CO2. The buildings are designed based on several different parameters, where the holistic approach to sustainable design is included. The buildings are based on the criteria for the Active House principles and inspired by the circuit concept of the Cradle-to-Cradle philosophy. The buildings are certified according to the recognized DGNB system, which has rated the building as silver.

Both the buildings and the surrounding landscape illustrate the latest developments in sustainable architecture, and thus show that sustainability is about more than achieving a green certification. A close interaction between construction and landscape is thus envisaged. The construction can be described as sustainable, as third-party verification has been carried out, including life cycle analyzes of the materials used.

Material filter

When we choose materials and products for Hotel GSH, they must meet certain requirements. These requirements include priority certifications and environmental labels, recycling potential, social responsibility, use of resources, material health and energy consumption in production, to name a few. To gather the necessary knowledge about the products' sub-components, installation options and production methods, both manufacturers and suppliers are involved in the construction process. If a product has harmful ingredients or the production has a negative environmental impact, we find another manufacturer. As a result, we have many solutions that are designed for separation, Cradle-to-Cradle certified, and have a positive impact that goes beyond the primary function.

Exploring circular sustainable initiatives

At Hotel GSH, we make a virtue of constantly revising and developing our sustainable initiatives. We test, and retest the products and measures we use in order to get the most optimal and up-to-date solution available. We focus on knowledge sharing, so that our experiences can inspire others to take more sustainable measures in the future. Our mission is to explore circular sustainable measures. Since the establishment of Hotel GSH in 2015, we have expanded our hotel operation, so that today we operate three hotels. We implement the experience we gain from running Hotel GSH to the greatest extent possible at Fredensborg Badehotel and Griffen Spahotel. It is our goal to operate all three hotels with the world in mind.

Redefining profit

We envision a society where we all contribute to a common goal and where everyone also benefits from the result. Our goal is of course a positive bottom line to create the possibility for continuous development and securing an attractive workplace. We want to expand and redefine the concept of profit by including our knowledge of sustainability, the clean water we drink, the fresh air we breathe and our materials that can be part of the circular system.

Green Key

All Bornholm Hotels' hotels are Green Key certified. Green Key is an international environmental label awarded to tourism companies that make a special effort to protect the environment. In order to achieve this certification, we must meet strict environmental requirements and go through an extensive approval procedure as well as ongoing control. The Green Key certification ensures that our sustainable measures contribute to a more environmentally friendly stay.

Comfort and sustainability without air conditioning

At Bornholm Hotels, including Griffen Spahotel, Fredensborg Badehotel and Hotel Green Solution House (GSH), we engage in sustainability and environmentally conscious choices. One of the conscious choices we have made is to do without air conditioning in our hotels. Air conditioning accounts for around 20% of buildings' energy consumption worldwide, which corresponds to approximately 1% of global electricity consumption. We have equipped our rooms with fans, which ensure that you can sleep comfortably at night, even without air conditioning. Then you have the opportunity to make your own choice regarding temperature and environment.
